Last night, actually quite often this week, we got a fog advisory. It looked a bit like this outside:

Kinja'd!!!

Not my photo cuz potato cam while driving in any situation isn't a good idea. While driving, though, I noted that if I was to look ahead two telephone pole lengths (scientific measurement) you could see objects as dark blobs and three lengths away was basically nothing.

What do people do in this situation? I put on fog lights so other people know there is a car coming and so I can see the ground. Some follow suit. Others turn off their lights COMPLETELY. I drove 3 miles to get home...quick drive...and passed 4 cars without headlights on. Then, about 1 in 4 cars had their highbeams on.

How did I know their highbeams were on? BECAUSE I COULD SEE THE ANGLE OF THEIR LIGHTS LIGHTING UP THE FOG!

Kinja'd!!!

Look, no high beams on left, high beams on right. People driving see the world glowing and believe they can see better but it reduces their visibility and BLINDS ME (others too, I guess).

During the day, my mirrors are perfectly aligned so I can see behind me and in the lanes on my right and left. At night they become the most efficient way to destroy my vision.

Tell your friends, turn off the high beams when driving in fog or blizzards. Run fog lights if you have them but at the very least have your headlights on. I mean really.

I never understood why people used their high beams in fog. You can clearly see it is much harder to see with them on. I think when I learned how to drive they specifically taught you not to do this. I guess they don't teach that anymore? I also don't think they teach the left lane is for passing anymore either.

On a side note: I can't figure it out, but I've been flashed high beams when my fog lights are on. It is like the other driver assumes I have my highs on.

You forget the idiots who normally drive with their high beams on...

...

because one of their dipped beams is out.

Honestly, where I live, the police could make a killing off fix-it tickets for faulty lights, and moving violations for misuse of main beams.

I'm not too familiar with driving in thick fog, but this sounds incredibly annoying. Dangerous even, and stupid. I can under the misguided use of the high beams, but not having your lights on at all is like you've got a death wish.

Oh, and rear fog lights. Only use them when visibility due to snow or fog is less than 50 meters.

Try having a car with Bi-Xenon lights. You get flashed high beams because American drivers are, quite frankly, pussies.

So many people drive with them on a normal day but it's that much more noticeable in bad weather. I wish our local police would enforce it because I get blinded far too often.

I was driving with my friend...and it was the middle of the day, he had his high beams on, I thought maybe he justs didn`t see, so i was like `dude, you`re highbeams are on`he said: "good, I want to be seen."

We argued for a while about wether this was stupid or not My position: Yes

His position: No. We eventually just agreed to disagree. But really...c'mon man.

My girlfriend had hers while driving behind me so I asked if she was aware. It was a new car so I figured maybe she didn't notice. She had no idea they were on and felt terrible that she could have been driving like that for the week following her purchase of the car.

Its impossible to win even common sense arguments nowadays. Even when people have no facts or reasoning to their position they will respond with some form or variation of "Yeah, but still." and agree to disagree.
